Celebrating the Importance of Brazilian Peanut: A Call for Recognition and Growth

Recently, Mônika Bergamaschi, Executive Director of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) Institute, highlighted the critical role of peanuts in Brazilian agriculture in a public hearing at the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, Supply, and Rural Development of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. The debate, which also addressed the creation of a National Peanut Day, gathered representatives from both public and private sectors to explore the benefits and potential of this vital crop.

Sustainability and Agricultural Benefits
Bergamaschi emphasized that peanuts are more than just a popular food product—they are a key player in sustainable agriculture. “It’s crucial to highlight the sustainability of peanut production, especially as we discuss agricultural decarbonization and clean energy production,” she stated. Peanuts significantly aid soil health, particularly when used in crop rotation systems. They are commonly grown in areas transitioning from sugarcane and other grasses, enriching the soil with nitrogen—an essential nutrient that reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers.

Economic Impact and Global Potential
Bergamaschi also pointed out that the peanut industry in Brazil has developed due to the entrepreneurial spirit of rural producers and its role in the local economy. Despite its success, she noted the need for increased investment in research and development, similar to the advancements seen in the soybean and corn sectors. This investment could heighten Brazil’s position in the global market, expanding access to demanding markets such as Europe and beyond.

Call for National Recognition
The proposal to set a National Peanut Day aims to enhance public recognition and appreciation for the peanut industry. “Peanuts are a nutritious, accessible, and flavorful product with significant growth potential. We need to invest more in research, improved seed varieties, and overall production to further boost this crop and support Brazilian farmers,” Bergamaschi added.
As global demand for sustainable and high-quality agricultural products grows, the Brazilian peanut industry is poised for expansion. Recognizing and celebrating the value of peanuts through special events and continued investment will help bolster Brazil’s position as a leading producer and exporter of peanuts, benefiting both the environment and the agricultural community.
