Geographical Indications Platform for Coffee: A Milestone in Traceability and Appreciation of Brazilian Products

The digital platform for coffee Geographical Indications (GIs), developed through an initiative by the CNA Institute, has issued the first traceability labels for export. This innovative tool aims to revolutionize how Brazilian coffee is recognized and appreciated internationally.
The coffees produced in the Mantiqueira de Minas region, acknowledged as a Designation of Origin (DO), were the first to obtain traceability labels. This region, represented by APROCAM and the cooperatives Cocarive, Cooperrita, and Coopervass, follows strict production criteria defined in the Technical Specifications Book, ensuring the exceptional quality of coffee beans.

Matheus Ferreira, CNA Institute’s Deputy Executive Director, explained that although the GI platform is not yet finished, consumers can already access the label with a QR code on the product packaging and check data about production region, bean quality, as well as videos and photos. “We aim to add value and differentiate products by promoting management, control, and traceability of GIs. The platform is still under development, to be launched in the second half of the year, so we are excited about these results already achieved,” he said.

Developed by Agtrace Agricultural Traceability, the initiative to create the platform was launched in 2023 by the CNA Institute in partnership with the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI) and the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE). The digital platform will monitor relationships with the national and international markets, enhancing references such as the quality and origin of the GI-recognized coffee beans produced in the country.

Currently, Brazil has 114 GIs registered in the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), with 88 Indications of Origin (IPs) and 26 Designations of Origin (DOs). In the coffee segment, 15 GIs are registered in the country, 14 of which already use the new project platform.
At the end of June, the 14 coffee GIs took part in the international World of Coffee 2024 fair in Copenhagen, Denmark. At the BSCA and ApexBrasil stand, 12 of the coffee types presented were identified by QR codes and origin labels issued by ABDI, ICNA, and the SEBRAE system, highlighting the effectiveness and acceptance of the platform. The GIs platform for coffee represents a significant advancement in the traceability and appreciation of Brazilian products, promoting transparency and adding value to the beans produced in the country.
