CANNED PALM HEARTS

The pupunha is a palm tree native to the Americas. It has a sweet, mild flavor that can be combined with almost any other ingredient to make irresistible dishes. With a soft texture and less fibrous than other types of palm heart, the Pupunha has earned its place of appreciation in sophisticated gastronomy.

Palm heart production in Brazil is still based on the exploitation of native species such as juçara, native to the Atlantic Forest, and açaí, native to the Amazon rainforest. The large-scale extraction of these palm hearts has contributed to the extinction of these species, especially the juçara, which has the consequence of the removal of the palm heart, the death of the plant.

In this context, the pupunha has been growing as an alternative for economically and environmentally sustainable palm heart cultivation. Unlike the juçara, the pupunha doesn't die when the palm heart is removed, because just like banana trees, they form clumps and after the first cut the "offspring" grow, allowing the product to be produced permanently.
